Michael feels less like a portrait observed than one slowly emerging from within the surface itself. Layers of deep blue dissolve the boundaries between figure and atmosphere, allowing the subject to appear gradually as light uncovers new passages of tone. The steady gaze offers a quiet point of connection, while the surrounding color leaves much of the portrait suspended in ambiguity.
